Taxpayers can find help in determining eligibility by using the new
EITC Assistant on the IRS Web site.
If someone is eligible for the EIC or CTC but didn’t file. . .
Workers can file for tax credit refunds for the last three years. A worker must file a separate return for each year they qualified. I f claiming a child for the EIC or CTC, also fill out and at tach the Schedule EIC or Form 8812 for that year. A Form 1040X is not required. There is no late filing penalty, unless the worker owed income tax in the prior year. Any tax st ill owed the IRS will be deducted from the worker’s refund.

Taxpayers who qualify for EITC should explore available free tax preparation services. The IRS provides assistance to low-income taxpayers at more than 400 IRS offices nationwide. We also partner with local community and non-profit organizations to provide free tax return preparation for low-income and elderly taxpayers at more than 12,000 volunteer sites nationwide. Other options include the use of Free File, the free tax preparation and electronic filing program provided by software companies.
FREE TAX PREPARATION SERVICES... VITA
The VITA Program offers free tax help to low- to moderate-income (generally, $49,000 and below) people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers sponsored by various organizations receive training to help prepare basic tax returns in communities across the country. VITA sites are generally located at community and neighborhood centers, libraries, schools, shopping malls, and other convenient locations. Most locations also offer free electronic filing.

PROPERTY TAX/RENT REBATE PROGRAM for Seniors

The income eligibility level for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program has been raised from $15,000 a year to $35,000 a year, excluding half of Social Security income, and the maximum rebate was increased from $500 to $650 for homeowners.
Claimants or spouses 65 years of age or older; widows or widowers 50 years of age or older; and the permanently disabled 18 years of age or older may qualify for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.
